F*ck Yes, Be Exactly the Person You Want to Be

“In My Mind” is the new theme song for The Imperfectionist.

Amanda Palmer wrote the song in Australia for a week long yoga training teacher course. She thought the song was too “hippy,” and never expected to play it again. A week later, she beta tested the song during one of her epic free “ninja gigs,” and found that people loved it:

“It’s amazing how my own perspective on a song is so malleable, and that even having written hundreds and hundreds of songs I’m still so insecure. I think that also my growth as a songwriter can really be seen in that because now I’m allowing myself to write the sort of songs and stretch into the kind of material that always has been pretty natural for me, but that has been too uncool, too embarrassing, too outside my expected genre or whatever.” – Amanda Palmer, LA Weekly

The song is a poem. A tribute to accepting who you are, imperfections and all:

 “In my mind
In a future five years from now
I’m one hundred and twenty pounds
And I never get hung over
And in my mind
When I’m old I am beautiful
Planting tulips and vegetables
Which I will mindfully watch over
Not like me now
I’m so busy with everything
That I don’t look at anything
And when they put me in the ground
I’ll start pounding the lid
Saying I haven’t finished yet
I still have a tattoo to get
That says I’m living in the moment
And it’s funny how I imagined
That I could win this, win this fight
But maybe it isn’t all that funny
That I’ve been fighting all my life
But maybe I have to think it’s funny
If I wanna live before I die
And maybe it’s funniest of all
To think I’ll die before I actually see
That I am exactly the person that I want to be”
