You can spend a lifetime being someone else. That someone else is probably easier to be. People accept him more. He has a six figure salary, and “important” people admire and respect him. He drives a nicer car and has a white picket fence with the dogs and kids to go with it. He’s a member of a wine club and has season tickets to everything.
If you are who you are, then you’ll be happy with these things. An M5 will bring a car lover true joy, and a musicophile will get genuine enjoyment from season tickets to his local orchestra. But if you do and buy things for status and acceptance, you’ll become prickly and defensive. You’ll wonder why you’re not happy with everything that you have.
Are you pretending? If you pretend long enough, the pretense will eventually become truth. It’ll be harder to escape.
